What is Pilates?
Pilates is a mindful, low-impact exercise method that strengthens the core, improves posture, and enhances flexibility and mobility. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, it was originally known as Contrology and is grounded in five key principles: breathing, concentration, centring, precision, and flowing movement.
In addition to mat-based exercises, Joseph Pilates designed specialised equipment to both support and challenge the body using spring resistance. One of the most iconic and effective pieces is the Pilates Reformer, now a cornerstone of modern practice.
Who is Pilates For?
Pilates is suitable for everyone — from complete beginners to advanced athletes. It is particularly beneficial for those recovering from injury, managing chronic pain, or looking to improve overall strength and mobility. Regular Pilates helps build core stability, balance, and body awareness, supporting both physical and mental wellbeing.
Mat Pilates vs Reformer Pilates
Both Mat and Reformer Pilates follow the same core principles but differ in how resistance and movement are applied:

Mat Pilates
Uses your own body weight for resistance, building strength and control through gravity and body alignment.

Reformer Pilates
Uses spring resistance to either assist or increase the challenge of each movement, enhancing joint stability and deep muscle engagement.
Both approaches complement each other beautifully. Mat Pilates refines body awareness and control, while Reformer Pilates is especially effective for rehabilitation, postural alignment, and deep core strengthening.
Our 1:2 sessions combine both matwork and reformer exercises. Each participant spends half the session on the Reformer and half on the mat for a balanced and personalised experience.
